Dunvegan Nursery School Aftercare offers a specialised after school facility for Dunvegan Primary School pupils in Grades 1 - 4 (pupils aged 6-9 years). Aftercare is run by Elise du Plessis, Samantha Hook, Tanya de Bruin and Shannon McLaughlin.

  • Children are collected when their school day is completed. Each grade’s different finishing time is accommodated. Collection after the extra murals offered by the school is by prior arrangement. All children are collected from inside the school premises and their names are checked against the daily register, but we do not collect after matches.

  • Once at the school, the children are divided into gender-based groups and afforded the opportunity to change into comfortable clothes from home. This is as much to protect their uniforms as it is to smooth the transition from one school to another.

  • After washing, lunch is eaten. Meals can be ordered from Letzlunch – each lunchbox is individually packed with a tasty nutritious meal. Alternately, a healthy packed lunch may be sent from home. No junk food is allowed! Meals are eaten at the table in sociable groups.

  • To sustain energy levels, a school snack and drink are served approximately 2 hours after lunch.

  • Once the children have changed into ‘civvies’, they head outside. Our outdoor facility is filled with developmentally appropriate equipment to inspire imagination and promote the use of gross motor skills. After a morning of sitting behind a school desk, children crave the release of running, jumping and climbing. To build on their skills in this important area, outdoor games such as "Simon says", obstacle courses and treasure hunts are worked into the programme at every opportunity.

  • Refreshed by lunch, children are settled down to do homework. Written homework is supervised in a group setting. Reading homework is done on a one-on-one basis with a trained member of staff. The children’s differing abilities are accommodated. On completion of their homework, a choice of educational indoor or outdoor activities is offered.

  • After homework, some outdoor play and a snack, children are free to choose their activities for the remainder of the afternoon. They may choose from indoor and outdoor activities.

  • The indoor area has a fantasy section, book corner, large construction toys and tables set with board games, puzzles, educational toys and smaller construction materials like lego.

  • The outdoor area has an enormous sandpit with sand toys, jungle gyms, balance beams, gymnastic bars, movable construction equipment such as crates, tyres and pyramids (to re-create life-size models), bats (cricket, baseball and child size tennis rackets), balls (tennis, leather and plastic footballs and basketballs) , a netball/ basketball hoop and various swings.

  • The children are supervised at ALL times and are free to move between activities at will. Typically, groups of friends form and this highly valued part of the afternoon is spent in social play.
